We’ll be back later today, but we just wanted to check in early this morning with a quick bit of announcement news that broke over the weekend...

FUNimation has set finally Katsuhiro Otomo’s landmark anime Akira (1988) for release on 4K Ultra HD on 12/22. We’ve known the title was coming for a while now (it returns to theaters here in the U.S. for a limited run on 9/24), but we finally have the official confirmation of the remastered disc release.

The title is now available for pre-order on Amazon.com via this link and you can see the cover artwork at left and also below.

Apparently, it’s already been released on 4K disc in Japan and there’s a bit of concern that too much DNR may have been used by the Japanese animation studio to clean the image (the title is distributed there by Bandai Namco).

But we’ll have to see what it looks like when it finally arrives on disc here in the States. [Read on here...]

All right, we’re working on more reviews here today and there’s not a lot of release news to report, but we do want to let you all know that we’re going to be giving away SIX copies of new Paramount’s new Tom Cruise 4K Ultra HD titles on our Digital Bits social media channels this week—2x Top Gun, 2x War of the Worlds, and 2x Days of Thunder!

And our first giveaway starts NOW on Twitter...

Follow @BillHuntBits on Twitter and respond to THIS TWEET by telling us which of these three films (Top Gun, War of the Worlds, or Days of Thunder) is your favorite and why. Please respond just once, and note that this giveaway is only open to US readers (due to shipping restrictions, which are especially difficult during this pandemic). Every person who follows and responds will be entered in a giveaway for a chance to win a copy of that favorite 4K Ultra HD title. Three total discs will be given away on Twitter, one per winner. Entries will be accepted until 11 AM Pacific tomorrow (Tuesday 5/19) and the winners will be announced tomorrow afternoon (and also here on the site). Then we’ll message you to confirm your shipping address (which is why you need to follow). Good luck!

We’ll be running a similar contest on our Digital Bits Facebook page too later this week, so be sure to watch for the details. [Read on here...]

Afternoon, folks! And welcome to Friday. Is anyone else out there as ready for the weekend as we are?

This has been a busy week of just “three steps forward two steps backward” behind-the-scenes work here at The Bits. We got a lot done, but very little of it is visible to any of you. But that’s how it goes sometimes.

We’re all working on more reviews here at the site today (and we will be through the weekend—including War of the Worlds 4K and Days of Thunder 4K), but we do have some interesting release news to report today.

First up, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and HBO have just set His Dark Materials: The Complete First Season for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 8/4 (SRP $29.98 each). [Read on here...]

“Duelity!”

Duelity! Two characters facing off, each with their own agendas. Their goals conflict with one another.

“What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object?”

The battle goes back and forth, an even fight between two worthy opponents. It takes everything the protagonist has to stop the antagonist. And it often doesn’t end as expected. Or without some cost. The protagonist is pushed to the limit. The antagonist is almost justified in his actions, at least from his point of view. The antagonist represents what the protagonist could become but has the fortitude and strong morality not to.  [Read on here…]

All right, there’s not much in the way of news release news to report today, so I’ve got two quick items for you this afternoon…

First, I’ve just posted my in-depth review of Warner’s Mad Max: Fury Road in 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format. The disc streets today. While it’s not a perfect presentation as far as 4K goes, it does offer a significant visual improvement upon the already excellent Blu-ray edition. Do check it out.  [Read on here…]

Happy Leap Day! All right, we’ve just posted our first Ultra HD Blu-ray review here at The Digital Bits, and its none other than Ridley Scott’s The Martian, which is now available in 4K from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. Do check it out, as I think you’ll find it interesting (whether or not you intend to upgrade to UHD anytime soon).

I’m going to be posting a few more UHD title reviews this week here at The Bits, and then early next week I’ll post a larger column talking generally about my experiences with the format after a week’s worth of calibrating, testing, and viewing. I’ll give you my overall impressions, offer some advice on setup, and the like. [Read on here…]

We start today with another Pick-Ups/Scream Factory BD review for you today from our own Tim Salmons: Blood and Lace. Be sure to check it out.

The big release news today is that Warner has just officially set Mad Max: Fury Road for 4K UHD release on 3/1 (SRP $44.95, but the Amazon price is just $29.99). It appears the disc will include the same special features from the previous Blu-ray version. The UHD will also include a Blu-ray copy as well as Digital HD. You can see the cover artwork (and Amazon pre-order links) below. [Read on here…]

All right, folks. Sorry I missed yesterday’s post and that today’s is a little brief. I’ve been dealing with a medical concern over the last week or so – since returning to Comic-Con – and it’s had me worried and more than a little preoccupied. Fortunately, with the help of a very fine doctor, I got to the bottom of it yesterday, and it turned out not to be serious, easily addressable and all is well. Whew! So anyway, I’ve got a quick post for you today, and then I’ll be back tomorrow with a lot more.  [Read on here…]

We’ve got a couple things for you today to close out the week. First though, I wanted to direct you all to our own Michael Coate’s latest History, Legacy & Showmanship column, which we posted yesterday, which features a great look back at The Empire Strikes Back in celebration of the film’s 35th anniversary (which was yesterday). Michael offers lots of extensively-researched details about the film’s initial theatrical release, as well as production trivia, a summary of critic reviews, and even a great new roundtable interview with cinema historians about the film. Do give it a look – I think you’ll really enjoy it.  [Read on here…]
