All right, we’ve checked in with our retail and industry sources and have learned that Marvel and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s wildly popular animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is likely to street on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 3/19.

As you know, the film has just been nominated for an Oscar in the Best Animated Feature Film category (and is very likely to be the leading contender). We haven’t been able to confirm the production and finish resolution of the film, so we don’t know if the animation was rendered natively at 2K or 4K. Either way, with its bright color palette and unique comic-panel texturing, it should look amazing on both Blu-ray and 4K UHD.

It’s reasonable to assume you’ll get at least Dolby Atmos audio. Sony doesn’t typically include Dolby Vision HDR on their 4K releases though, so expect HDR10.

Amazon is showing Blu-ray, Blu-ray “Limited Edition”, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD SKUs. We don’t know of any other retailer-exclusive versions, but we’ll have to wait until the title is officially announced.

FYI, it appears that Universal’s planned street date for M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K is 4/16.

And we believe Pet Sematary (1989) is coming to 4K from Paramount on 3/26.

Both of those dates are yet to be confirmed with our sources.

We may have more of an update later if news and time permit, but I just wanted to check in early here at The Digital Bits to share word we’ve just gotten from our retail and industry sources that suggests 3/26 is likely to be the street date for Warner and DC’s massively-successful Aquaman, from director James Wan.

The film has a 2K Digital Intermediate (per IMDB, and I haven’t confirmed this officially), but large portions were filmed in IMAX which should mean very high quality pixels. And the film should still look impressive in HDR on 4K. We have no word yet what the specs will be, but we would imagine Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio at the least.

Amazon.com is also suggesting that there will be a Blu-ray 3D SKU in addition to Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD. Watch for the official announcement in the next few weeks.

One thing you can say for sure about Leon Vitali, is that he knew Stanley Kubrick. Vitali first came into contact with Kubrick when he was cast to play the role of Lord Bullingdon in Barry Lyndon. The two quickly struck up a friendship, and Vitali soon found himself working side-by-side with the director as his assistant and a permanent part of Kubrick’s staff. Over an association of more than 25 years, Vitali personally worked on nearly every facet of Kubrick’s films, from scripting to casting, production, laboratory supervision and advertising. Boy, have we got some big news today!

First though, we’ve just posted a trio of new Blu-ray disc reviews...

I’ve turned in my thoughts on Shout! Factory’s outstanding new Gravity Falls: The Complete Series Blu-ray box set which is packed with love and a lot of extras. If you’re a fan, it’s outstanding.

Also, Dennis Seuling has offered his take on the Amy Schumer comedy I Feel Pretty on Blu-ray from Universal and Dante Lam’s Chinese actioner Operation Red Sea on Blu-ray from Well Go USA. Enjoy!

Now then... let’s get to that news: First up, we’ve just learned that BBC Home Entertainment will be releasing Sherlock: Season One on 4K Ultra HD on 11/6 (SRP $29.98)! No kidding, you can pre-order it here already on Amazon.com. [Read on here...]

This is just a quick update with word we’ve gotten overnight from our retail sources.

It currently appears that Universal’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom will street on Blu-ray, DVD, 3D, and 4K Ultra HD on 9/18.

To be very clear, this is not official. It’s simply the street date the studio has been giving to retailers.

The date is still subject to change, and shouldn’t be considered set until Universal makes their official announcement.

But in the interest of those who may be wondering, that’s the current time frame to look for it, per our best available information.

One other note: We posted our review of Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol in 4K Ultra HD here on The Bits last night, as planned. Turns out, it’s the best of the lot as far as image quality goes. Do give it a look.

All right, the big news today is that Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has set Tomb Raider (2018) for release on Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 6/12, with the Digital release expected on 5/29. The 4K disc will feature both Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio, and the film was finished as a 4K Digital Intermediate. Extras will include 4 featurettes (Tomb Raider: Uncovered, Croft Training, Breaking Down the Rapids, and Lara Croft: Evolution of an Icon). We’ve updated the 4K Ultra HD Release List here at The Bits accordingly. You can see the cover artwork to the left and also below. We’ll add the Blu-ray 3D cover artwork as soon as we have it.

By the way, we’ve also updated the 4K Ultra HD Release List with new information from retail and industry sources, which suggest that Avengers: Infinity War will be an August release. Also, Disney MAY be planning to release Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron on 4K with it. Paramount is releasing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on 7/17. Universal is working on Deer Hunter for July. Warner appears to be prepping The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions to follow the original film to 4K late this year. And finally, Sony may be prepping Panic Room for release on BD and 4K this year. As always, we caution you to consider all of this information Rumor Mill-worthy until the studios make official announcements.

One last 4K note: We expect to have our hands on Paramount’s Braveheart and Gladiator, along with Warner’s The Matrix, on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray by the end of the week or early next. Rest assured, we’ll get in-depth reviews up here at The Bits as soon as they come in. [Read on here...]

All right… before we get started today, we’ve posted a whole bunch of new disc reviews in the last two days, including my own takes on Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan and The Post, Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water, and Randal Kleiser’s Grease: 40th Anniversary Edition all in 4K Ultra HD from Paramount and/or 20th Century Fox. All are worth your time, but let me tell you… Saving Private Ryan is a revelation, an absolutely reference-quality A/V experience on this format. It’s really something. All of these titles are currently available except for Ryan, which streets on 5/8.

Meanwhile, Tim has checked in with reviews of Shout! Factory’s Doctor Detroit, Scream Factory’s Prince of Darkness: Collector’s Edition (both regular and the new Steelbook edition), Epic/Dread Central’s Terrifier, Fox’s Legion: The Complete First Season, and Arrow’s Killer Klowns from Outer Space, all of them on Blu-ray Disc. First up, Walt Disney Home Entertainment has set Ava DuVernay’s A Wrinkle in Time for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 6/5, with the Digital release expected on 5/29. The Blu-ray version will feature English 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, while the 4K UHD will include English Dolby Atmos. We believe that the 4K disc will have Dolby Vision HDR as well, but we’re awaiting confirmation of that.

Extras on both Blu-ray versions will include the A Journey Through Time featurette, audio commentary (with director Ava DuVernay, producer Jim Whitaker, co-screenwriter Jennifer Lee, production designer Naomi Shohan, 1st AD Michael Moore, editor Spencer Averick, and VFX supervisor Rich McBride), 4 deleted scenes, bloopers, 2 music videos (I Believe and Warrior). You can see the Blu-ray cover art above left and below. We should have the 4K Ultra HD cover art in the next couple days. [Read on here...]

All right, we’re closing out the week with a couple things...

First of all, Lionsgate has set Aardman Animation’s Early Man for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 5/22, with the Digital release expected on 5/15. Extras will include 4 featurettes (Before the Beginning of Time: Creating Early Man, Nick Park: Massaging the Funny, The Valley Meets the Bronze, and Hanging at Aardman Studios: A Workshop Exploration). There’s no 4K Ultra HD release currently planned for the U.S., but there is one expected in the U.K., at least for now.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has set the comedy Game Night for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 5/22, with the Digital release expected on 5/1. Extras will include a gag reel and a featurette called An Unforgettable Evening: Making Game Night. [Read on here...]
