All right, I’m still working on that Criterion WALL-E 4K review and hope to have it up this weekend. Real life got in the way a little bit here over the last couple of days, not to mention some necessary behind-the-scenes work here at the site. But I will say this: Both the 4K presentation and the accompanying Blu-ray presentation, are absolutely fantastic. As in best-ever image quality for this film.

In the meantime, Tim has posted his thoughts on Rod Serling’s Night Gallery: Season Three on Blu-ray from our friends over at Kino Lorber Studio Classics. Sounds like it’s another fabulous set with more great extras.

And we do have several good pieces of release news to report here at the site today...

First, Turbine Media in Germany has finally announced their planned 6-Disc 4K Ultra HD Ultimate Edition of Peter Jackson’s The Frighteners (1996) for release on 12/2 (Yes, that is a Friday—keep in mind, this is a German release). The film has been fully remastered from the original camera negative and graded for high dynamic range (including Dolby Vision) in a process supervised by the director. [Read on here...]

A new Dolby Atmos mix has been created for the film as well. It was shot in Super 35 format and was released theatrically at the 2.35:1 aspect ratio, but for this release Jackson has also delivered a 1.78:1 presentation (that offers more detail at the top and bottom of the frame) in addition to the 2.35:1 version. So you’ll get individual 4K discs featuring the Theatrical Version and Director’s Cut in 2.35:1, plus Blu-rays with both versions in 2.35:1, and a third Blu-ray with the Director’s Cut in open matte 1.78:1. There will also be a Blu-ray full of special features.

In addition to the legacy extras, Turbine has commissioned a new cast and crew retrospective by filmmaker Christian Genzel. Note that Turbine’s release will also be coded for Regions A, B, and C. You can see their packaging above left and also below. As you can see below, Turbine will offer the set in two different 6-Disc Ultimate Edition versions, each featuring different cover artwork (click here or on the images below to pre-order on the Turbine website)...

For those who may be wondering, we expect that Arrow Video will be releasing their own version of the film in 4K here in the States eventually, but details are still yet to be announced. So watch for those to be revealed in the coming weeks.

Also today, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has set Wolfgang Petersen’s Air Force One and Martin Campbell’s The Mask of Zorro for re-release on 4K Ultra HD in new Steelbook editions on 3/7/23. Each will now include Dolby Vision HDR (as the original 2018 and 2020 editions offered only HDR10 High Dynamic Range). All other content in the sets will be the same as before, including Dolby Atmos audio. You can see the cover art for those below as well.

Meanwhile, Mill Creek Entertainment has set Jimmy Womble’s Running the Bases for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 2/21/23.

Warner Bros. has set the DC animated film Legion of Super-Heroes for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 2/7/23.

Via Vision and Imprint Films have just announced their February 2023 Blu-ray release slate, which is set to include The Mountain (1956), Something to Live For (1952), Carrie (1950), The Bad News Bears Go to Japan (1978), Hurry Sundown (1967), and Resurrection (1980). Street date for all is roughly 2/22/23. You can pre-order them here.

And finally today, Paramount and Nickelodeon have officially announced the kids animated series Star Trek: Prodigy – Season 1, Volume 1 for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 1/3/23. In addition to all 10 episodes, you’ll get bonus content (TBD) and key art character cards. You can see the cover art for that below too...
