Roddenberry Vault announced, Hunger Games goes 4K & Brad Bird’s The Iron Giant: Signature Edition is terrific

by

All right, today’s post is going to be a quick one, as I’m celebrating my 26th wedding anniversary with my lovely wife, Sarah. But we do have a couple bits of very good news for you…

The first big announcement today is that CBS, Paramount, and the estate of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry are officially releasing a 3-disc Blu-ray collection on 12/13 called Star Trek: The Original Series – The Roddenberry Vault. Produced by our old friend Roger Lay, Jr., who created many of the amazing features for the recent Star Trek: Enterprise and Star Trek: The Next Generation Blu-rays, this set will contain 12 classic Original Series episodes (specifically The Corbomite Maneuver, Arena, Space Seed, This Side of Paradise, The Devil in the Dark, The City on the Edge of Forever, Operation – Annihilate!, Metamorphosis, Who Mourns for Adonais?, Mirror, Mirror, The Trouble with Tribbles, and Return to Tomorrow) along with 3 new documentaries, including Inside the Roddenberry Vault (featuring Rod Roddenberry looking at long-lost film reels), Star Trek: Revisiting a Classic (a retrospective look at back at the making of the series), and Strange New Worlds: Visualizing the Fantastic (a look at the series’ visual effects and futuristic technology).  [Read on here…]

You can see the cover artwork for the set below and read more here at EW. We’ll add the Amazon.com pre-order link as soon as it goes live.

Also today, Lionsgate has now officially set all four Hunger Games films – The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, Mockingjay, Part 1, and Mockingjay, Part 2 – for release on 4k Ultra HD Blu-ray format on 11/8. Each will feature High Dynamic Range and Dolby Atmos audio, and will include the Blu-ray version of the film as well (with such extras as were on the movie Blu-rays for each title). SRP is $22.99 each and you can see the cover artwork below (and pre-order them on Amazon by clicking on each)…

As you can see, we’ve also posted the final cover artwork for Sony’s 4K UHD releases of The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons, both of which are due on 10/11.

And finally today, I’ve just gotten my hands on Warner’s new Signature Edition Blu-ray edition of Brad Bird’s amazing animated film The Iron Giant, which is due in stores on 9/6, and let me tell you: It’s absolutely terrific. The film looks and sounds better than ever and the new extras are wonderful, personal, and even moving. Not only that, the disc has a featurette that takes you down into the hallowed “Salt Mine” in Kansas where Hollywood archives all of its rarest film assets – something I don’t think I’ve ever seen anywhere else before on disc. I’ll have a full review of the title here on The Bits tomorrow, but in the meantime: RUN, don’t walk, to order yourself a copy. You can do so here or by clicking on the cover art below. The Blu-ray is just $9.99 on Amazon and it’s a treasure. There’s also a swaggy UCE box set version available for $74.99 (but know that the disc-based content in each version is exactly the same – the box just gives you an art book and additional collectibles). Do not miss it!

That’s all for now. We’ll be back with more tomorrow, so see you then!
