Afternoon, folks.  We’ve got some reviews for you today...

First, Doogan has delivered his thoughts on the Sony’s Blu-ray release of the recent Evil Dead remake.  Sounds like it’s okay if you have seen the original Sam Raimi films, but if you have it’s tough sledding.  It’s now available in stores.

Also, in honor of the theatrical debut of The World’s End, Tim Salmons has turned his attention to a pair of Universal catalog Blu-ray “Steelbook” re-issues, this time featuring a pair of his favorite comedies: Edgar Wright’s Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz!  Both are also now available.

Now let’s get to today’s release news... [...]

Sony has officially set After Earth for Blu-ray Combo and DVD release on 10/8.  Extras on both will include 3 featurettes (A Father’s Legacy, 1,000 Years in 300 Seconds and The Nature of the Future) and the team video for the winners of the X-Prize/After Earth Robotics Challenge introduced by Jaden Smith.  To this, the Blu-ray will exclusively add an alternate opening and 3 more featurettes (Building a World, Pre-Visualizing the Future and The Animatics of After Earth).  You’ll find cover artwork below.

Heads-up for those of you who may be fans: Warner Home Video released Steven Spielberg Presents Tiny Toon Adventures: Volume 4 on DVD only yesterday (SRP $19.97).

20th Century Fox and DreamWorks have announced the 10/15 Blu-ray and DVD release of the Tony Award-winning Shrek the Musical.  Extras will include a sing-along songbook and the From Swamp to Stage: The Making of Shrek the Musical featurette.

Image Entertainment and RLJ will reissue The Twilight Zone: The Complete Fifth Season on DVD on 9/3 (SRP $29.98).

Gaiam Vivendi Entertainment and A Squared Entertainment will release the animated Secret Millionaires Club: Volume Two on DVD on 9/10.

Gaiam Vivendi has also set the Rat Liotta thriller Suddenly for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 9/17 (SRP $19.97 and $14.93).

Lionsgate will release Bonnie & Clyde: Justified on DVD only on 11/5, along with Six Shooters and Killer Holiday.

The BBC has also revealed that the animated Doctor Who: Scream of the Shalka and Doctor Who: The Ice Warriors arrive on DVD on 9/17.

Finally, Starz and Anchor Bay Entertainment have set Magic City: The Complete Second Season for Blu-ray and DVD release on 11/5 (SRP $54.99 and $44.98).  Extras will include 5 featurettes (The Gamble for Havana, The Criminal Element, Tales from the Underbelly, Magic City Style and The Music That Makes Magic).

And in other news this afternoon, Peter Becker of The Criterion Collection has posted a good entry on their Current blog, explaining the company’s decision to begin offering all their titles in Blu-ray and DVD Dual Format, meaning that both format discs will be included in each package.  It’s well worth reading, so don’t miss it.  We here at The Bits applaud Criterion for their on-going commitment to doing right by their customers.  Long may they continue!

Here’s a look at the Blu-ray cover art for Sony’s After Earth, Fox and DreamWorks’ Shrek the Musical and Universal and Kino’s The Devil Bat (due 9/17)...
