All right, this is just a quick release news update before the weekend. But we’ve got some good stuff for you…

To start, we have great news on a title I first revealed to all of you on New Year’s Eve: The Wachowski’s Speed Racer (2008)! And the update is that pre-orders are starting to appear online (on Amazon UK and Zavvi so far, but I expect the US pre-orders on Amazon and Gruv to appear soon as well) for the 4K Ultra HD and 4K Steelbook release!

The street date is TBA, but my sources say it’s likely Q2, so I would guess you can look for it to arrive sometime in April or May.

We don’t have A/V specs yet, but I’m hoping for a 100GB disc, and both Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio.

Each edition will be a 2-disc set, including the film on 4K disc and Blu-ray—probably the previous international BD SKU, as the BD disc includes the same featurettes released internationally, which include 4 featurettes: Spritle in the Big Leagues (15 mins), Speed Racer: Supercharged! (16 mins), Speed Racer: Car-Fu Cinema (27 mins), and Speed Racer: Ramping Up! (10 mins, which was not included on the US Blu-ray).

The 4K disc will also include a featurette: Wonderful World of Racing: The Amazing Racer Family (31 mins), which was previously a Target exclusive feature in the US.

And apparently the Steelbook will include a slipcase, a 32-page book (The World of Speed Racer), a pair of mini theatrical posters, plus a Mach 5 art and 6 character cards. We’ll share the final cover artwork, as well as official specs and the street date, as soon as it comes in. [Read on here...]

In terms of announcement news today, we do have some great breaking news for you: Lionsgate is getting ready to announce their November slate of 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray titles, which will include Neil Marshall’s The Descent: 20th Anniversary Edition (2006) 4K + BD Steelbook (including both versions via seamless branching as well as both new and legacy special features)—that’s a Lionsgate Limited exclusive. You’ll also get Francis Lawrence’s The Long Walk (2025) on 4K + Blu-ray Steelbook as an Amazon exclusive, with the Blu-ray + DVD version available via Walmart. [Read on here...]

It will feature their a complete 16-track concert from their 2023 Spicy Meatball Tour recorded in London’s O2 Arena, along with the band’s animated film Post Apocalypto and music videos for ...Baby One More Time, Wicked Game, Video Games, Fiber d’Lish, Tenacious D’s The Who Medley, You Never Give Me Your Money/The End, and Time Warp. Before we get going today, it looks like we finally know what the next two Steven Spielberg films are that are going to be released in 4K Ultra HD: Multiple retail sources are reporting that both Minority Report (2002) and Catch Me If you Can (2002) are coming to the format before the end of the year from Paramount. Street date for each is TBA, but this isn’t entirely surprising—both films have been recently available Digitally in 4K. As more information comes in, we’ll be sure to let you know.

Speaking of Paramount, their long-delayed 4K Ultra HD Steelbook release of Karyn Kusama’s Æon Flux (2005) is finally set for 10/7.

Also, we have a street date for Christopher McQuarrie’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (2025) on Blu-ray, DVD, 4K Ultra HD, and 4K Steelbook. Look for it to arrive on 10/14. [Read on here...]

All right, as you may have noticed, we’ve been having some functionality issue here at The Bits website in the last week or two. I’m gonna talk about that a little more in a second, so hold that thought.

But first, I wanted to call your attention to a bunch of new disc reviews we’ve completed here at the site lately…

Over the last three or four days, I’ve completed detailed reviews of four of the films in MGM’s new 007: James Bond – Sean Connery 6-Films Collection in 4K Ultra HD, including Terence Young’s Dr. No (1962), From Russia with Love (1963), and Thunderball (1965), as well as Guy Hamilton’s Goldfinger (1964).

Now, I was in the middle of reviewing You Only Live Twice (1967) when I discovered that the copy of the film on 4K disc in my set was defective (I’m having a layer switch issue late in the film—just a bad disc I think, not a widespread issue). So I’m awaiting a replacement copy from WBDHE and I’ll resume my review work on the set as soon as it arrives. in the meantime, I may knock out another 4K review or two, so be sure to stay tuned.

Also today, Tim has posted reviews of Wyott Ordrung’s Monster from the Ocean Floor (1954) on Blu-ray from Film Masters, as well as Gordon Flemying’s Dr. Who and the Daleks (1965) and Daleks’ Invasion Earth 2150 AD (1966) in 4K Ultra HD from the good people at Severin Films.

Dennis has turned in his thoughts on Glenn Gordon Caron’s Clean and Sober (1988) on Blu-ray from the Warner Archive Collection.

And Stephen has offered a genuinely in-depth look at our old friend Vincent Pereira’s A Better Place (1997), which has been newly remastered on Blu-ray from View Askew and the MVD Rewind Collection!

Hey guys… my apologies for the lack of updates over the last couple of days. I’ve had a significant computer issue here that I’ve been dealing with which has basically knocked me offline briefly, but things are finally getting back to normal here today.

In terms of new disc reviews, we’ve got a bunch of great titles for you to read about today…

Tim has posted his take on Michael Anderson’s Orca: The Killer Whale (1977) in 4K UHD and Monk: Season Seven (2008-2009) on Blu-ray both from Kino Lorber Studio Classics, as well as John Carpenter’s Village of the Damned (1995) in 4K UHD from Shout! and Scream Factory.

Dennis has reviewed Sean Mathias’ Bent (1977) on Blu-ray from Vinegar Syndrome and Frank Borzage’s The Spanish Main (1945) on Blu-ray from the Warner Archive Collection.

Stuart has offered his take on Lina Wertmüller’s The End of the World in Our Usual Bed on a Night Full of Rain (1978), Robert Altman’s A Prairie Home Companion (2006), and Jack Arnold’s Black Eye (1974), all on Blu-ray from the Warner Archive Collection.

And Stephen has delivered his thoughts on Stephen Norrington’s Blade (1998) in 4K UHD from Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment.

In terms of new release news, A24 has just announced a shop-exclusive version of Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist (2024) in both 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray that’s due to street in March. The film has been scanned from the original 35mm negatives with the VistaVision footage scanned at 6K, and it will be presented in the proper 1.66:1 aspect ratio on disc. The audio and HDR formats have yet to be announced, but we assume HDR10 high dynamic range at least. [Read on here...]

Greetings, Bits-ers! We’ve got some great announcement news for you this afternoon, but first...

Tim has taken a look at a couple of new releases on disc for you all, including Sergio Martino’s Torso (1973), an Italian giallo title from Arrow Video in 4K Ultra HD, and also Antonio Margheriti’s Cannibal Apocalypse (1980) in 4K Ultra HD from Kino Cult. So that should take care of your schlock horror cravings for today.

Now then, the big announcement news today is that 20th Century Studios has just officially set Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus (2024) for 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD release on 12/3, with the Digital release expected in a couple of weeks on 10/15. The title will come in Steelbook packaging only. Look for HDR10 high dynamic range and Dolby Atmos audio on a 66GB disc. The aspect ratio (per the press release) is 2.39:1.

[Editor’s Note: The studio press release indicates HDR10 only, but the open packaging shot—when zoomed in—reveals that the disc has the Dolby Vision logo on it. We’ve asked the studio to confirm and will post an update here when we hear back.]

[Editor’s Update – 10/1/24: Just a quick heads up to clarify... I’ve confirmed with studio sources that the Alien: Romulus 4K will indeed have Dolby Vision HDR, despite the fact that their press release suggested otherwise. However: No, Disney and 20th Century aren’t necessarily adding DV to all future Ultra HD titles. Instead, they’re making the decision to include it on a case by case basis going forward.]

Extras will include the Return to Horror: Crafting Alien: Romulus documentary, which includes 4 parts (The Director’s Vision, Creating the Story, Casting the Faces, and Constructing the World). You’ll also get 2 additional featurettes (Inside the Xenomorph Showdown and Alien: A Conversation which features Alvarez talking with original Alien director Ridley Scott). The big news today is that Marvel and Disney have just officially set Shawn Levy’s Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) for release on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on 10/22, with the Digital release expected on 10/1. The 4K disc will include Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio on a 66GB disc. There will be a wide-release 4K version in Amaray packaging, along with dual limited-edition Steelbooks one of which features Deadpool on the cover with a red interior, and the other featuring Wolverine on the cover with a yellow interior. A Walmart-exclusive Amaray version will also include “pop-up” packaging featuring the Deadpool corp. Regardless of which version you buy, the disc will contain audio commentary with Shawn Levy and actor Ryan Reynolds, a gag reel, 4 featurettes (Finding Madonna: Making the Oner, Practical Approach: Celebrating the Art of Ray Chan, Loose Ends: The Legacy of Heroes, and Wolverine), 3 deleted scenes (Elevator Ride, Do Nothing, and Daddy’s in Love), and “Fun Sack” (Dr. Deadpool, Product Review, and Wade is Back).
